University of Limpopo Debating Society (ULDS), in collaboration with the Student Representative Council (SRC), will be hosting a debate championship that will explore the topic, ‘The Role of Education in Finding Solutions for Africa’.
Subtopics:
- Should we prioritise decolonising the markets or the education system?
- Is education a fundamental right that should be offered for free? How can we ensure education is both free and accessible to all?
The purpose of this debate championship is to foster intellectual exchange and collaboration across various faculties while encouraging critical thinking and public speaking skills among students.
This initiative aims to engage participants in discussions about national and continental education challenges, ultimately contributing to the advancement of a university culture that emphasises discourse and innovation.
Additionally, the event seeks to raise awareness about important issues related to decolonisation, funding, and accessibility within higher education.
The faculty that wins the championship will be awarded a floating trophy, which will be held by the Faculty Chairperson until the next debate.
Format: British Parliamentary Style
Participants: Teams from each faculty (2 students per team)
Rounds: Preliminary Rounds (school, interdepartmental debates) →
Semifinals (interschool debate) → Finals (inter faculty debate)
