RESEARCH CHAIR IN SCHOOLS AS ENABLING ENVIRONMENTS: POSTGRADUATE STUDY POSITIONS AND POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
POSTGRADUATE STUDY POSITIONS
The Research Chair in Schools as Enabling Environments at the University of Limpopo seeks to recruit Masters and Doctoral students to register and carry out research in the field of schools. We are particularly looking for candidates from any of the following study fields: Curriculum Studies. Public Health, Sociology, Education, English Studies, and African Languages.
Prospective students would be expected to participate in ongoing research conducted by the Research Chair. They will also be expected to focus their degree studies on any of the following themes:
- Theme 1 – Literacy development: To investigate factors that affect poor reading in South African schools.
- Theme 2 – Instructional leadership: To investigate the role of school leadership in making schools enabling environments in schooling.
- Theme 3 –Inclusive education: To investigate epistemic access and success for learners who experience barriers to learning.
- Theme 4 –Safety and security: To investigate psychosocial factors that make schools toxic and unsafe for children and young adults.
- Theme 5 –Curriculum support: To investigate how teachers can be supported in subjects that they struggle to teach.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Have an Honours degree or equivalent qualification in any of the above-mentioned fields.
- Have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in any of the above-mentioned fields;
- An average grade of at least 65%;
- Good writing and research skills;
- Willingness to participate in a number of research projects nested in the Research Chair.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
The University of Limpopo, under the SARChi: DSI/NRF-UL Co-funded Chair in Schools as Enabling Environments (SES) intends to increase its research outputs and throughput of postgraduate students, strengthen supervision, and add to its number of postdoctoral research fellows to significantly expand its research base. To accomplish this, the University invites applications from prospective postdoctoral research fellows who will be based within SES Unit in the School of Education, Faculty of Humanities.
Conditions of the Funding for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
- Fellowship funding may not be held concurrently with another fellowship from any other government sources (NRF, etc.) and any full-time salaried employment.
- Postdoctoral fellows may hold non-binding supplementary grants or rewards to the institutional capped value.
- Postdoctoral fellows will be based at UL full-time for the duration of the fellowship and should not be employed (full-time or part-time) during the tenure of the fellowship.
- General eligibility criteria for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
- Fellowship funding will depend on the availability of funds.
- Applicants must have obtained their doctoral degree within five (5) years of applying (a doctoral degree awarded in 2020, 2021, and 2022 will receive preference).
- Postdoctoral research fellowships are open to South African citizens only
- A proven track record of research publication in accredited or peer-reviewed journals will be an added advantage.
- Applicants must attach certified copies of their identity document or passport, Master’s and Doctoral certificates
- Applicants should have research interests in the following fields/areas:
• Teacher Education, Curriculum Studies, Inclusive Education and Education Management

Value of fellowship
• R300 000 per annum
Reporting – For continuous monitoring of progress, the awardees will be required to submit a Progress Report to the host in the ninth month of the fellowship.
