Prof. Sodi appointed guest editor of the Journal of Mental Health Training, Education and Practice

Just after Prof Tholene Sodi had completed editing a Special Issue of Psychological Studies, the official journal of the National Academy of Psychology (NAOP) in India, he received an invitation to guest edit the Journal of Mental Health Training, Education and Practice (JMHTEP)

Prof Sodi is a Clinical Psychologist and Full Professor in the University of Limpopo (UL)’s Department of Psychology. According to him, the JMHTEP is one of the popular journals belonging to Emerald Publishing. The Special Issue that he has been requested to guest edit focuses on indigenous knowledge systems and mental health. It will also look at how indigenous knowledge systems contribute to people’s understanding of mental health conditions in different societies and countries and how this influences approaches to support, treatment, and service delivery.

Among others, the Special Issue welcomes submissions that revolve around traditional health practitioners and mental health; traditional healing and mental health; mental health issues as experienced by black and minority ethnic groups, and relationships between traditional health practices and mainstream mental health services.

Prof Sodi described being invited by Prof Di Bailey, the Editor-in-Chief of JMHTEP, to serve as guest editor of the Special Issue of the journal as evidence of international partners’ confidence in the scholarship from this part of the world.

“I see this as a great opportunity for me and other scholars from the South to demonstrate our readiness and capacity to edit international journals,” Prof Sodi said.

He added that being approached to guest edit the journal so soon after successfully guest editing a Special Issue of Psychological Studies demonstrates that work by researchers at UL is deserving of international recognition.

Though the closing date for submission is in the next few days, (31 October 2021), Prof Sodi encouraged local scholars who have manuscripts that are ready to submit to the Special Issue of the JMHTEP by visiting https://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/calls-for-papers/indigenous-knowledge-systems-and-mental-health

He said researchers with successful submissions would be alerted before the end of this year.
