Research Capacity Building Workshops for Postgraduate students and staff members – 2022

The School of Health Care Sciences embraces aspects of postgraduate studies that encourage a deliberate effort to focus on capacity development to facilitate and accelerate research output and throughput at the university. The School would like to introduce its generic research capacity-building workshops to all Postgraduate students, including staff members pursuing Postgraduate programmes, in collaboration with all Departments.

The objectives are to:

  • Familiarise postgraduate students with the UL’s research environment and research ethics;
  • Provide information about the research process, the functions, and components of the research proposal;
  • Introduce postgraduate students to similarity checking software (e.g. Turnitin), and interpret the similarity index report
  • Acquaint postgraduate students with various referencing styles used in research
  • Develop skills to utilise research resources such as the library and available research technologies;
  • Train postgraduate students in research methods and the available electronic resources on research methodology and technology available at UL (SPSS & Atlas.ti for instance;
  • Develop an understanding of the role of theory in research;
  • Provide postgraduate students with strategies on how to gain an understanding and access to their scientific community;
  • Introduce postgraduate students to the concept of graduateness and the meaning

Purpose: These workshops are designed to provide you with a more in-depth understanding of the research process. By the end of the workshops, you should be able to engage in research discussions with greater confidence about topics such as literature reviews, research methodologies, and the role of theory in research, among others.

Requirements: Registered as a Postgraduate student for the 2022 academic year
