How do we solve the most urgent challenges of our time? At the University of Limpopo, we believe the answers emerge where creativity meets evidence, and where art and science converge to re-imagine our shared future. It is with great excitement that we announce the Imagining Futures Conference, taking place from 09–14 March 2026 at the University of Limpopo, South Africa. This landmark event is hosted in collaboration with the NRF, University of Venda, Dutch Research Council (NWO), University of Fort Hare, and University of the Witwatersrand (WITS).
This year’s theme, Imagining Futures: Art/Science Perspectives on Water, Energy, and Food, places the spotlight on the WEF Nexus, a vital framework for understanding the interconnectedness of resources that sustain life. The conference aims to break traditional silos by fostering a space where artistic expression and scientific inquiry work together to shape resilient and sustainable futures for Africa and the world.
As part of the programme, two major research projects: Ecolmagining (led by Lenore Manderson and Eileen Moyer) and MineLives (led by Hannah le Roux and Franse Hooimeijer) will share insights from four years of grounded research on the relationships between water, energy, and food. Supported by the Merian Fund, these projects have taken an impact-driven approach that connects research to the broader aims of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their findings promise to spark new conversations about how interdisciplinary research and creative methodologies can help address complex societal challenges.
