A Warm Welcome to the Department of Research Administration and Development (DRAD)

Welcome to the Department of Research Administration and Development (DRAD), the central hub for empowering and advancing the research enterprise at the University of Limpopo (UL). Operating under the leadership of the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Partnerships, Professor Tebogo Mothiba, our department is the driving force behind cultivating a vibrant, high-impact, and sustainable research culture.

Our mission is to translate the University’s strategic ambitions into tangible research outcomes. We achieve this by providing comprehensive, professional, and efficient research administration and development services to our academic staff, researchers, and postgraduate students.

Our Strategic Foundation

The Research and Innovation Strategy (2026-2030)

Our overarching direction is set by the University’s Draft Research and Innovation Strategy for 2026-2030. This ambitious strategy is designed to position UL as a leading research-intensive institution. Its key focus areas include:

  • Achieving Research Excellence: Concentrating our efforts on strategic NICHE areas, significantly increasing our number of rated researchers, research chairs, and postdoctoral fellows, and boosting both the quantity and quality of our research publications.
  • Fostering Innovation: Creating a supportive environment that encourages entrepreneurship and the commercialisation of intellectual property, directly contributing to the University’s financial sustainability.
  • Expanding Global Reach: Strengthening international collaborations and partnerships that are aligned with our research strengths to enhance our global standing.
  • Digital Enablement: Integrating digital tools-like the new Postgraduate Management System (PGMS) and data analytics-to streamline research administration, enhance supervision, and accelerate postgraduate success.

This strategy ensures that every research activity at UL is aligned with our core motto: “Finding Solutions for Africa.”

The DRAD Operational Plan 2025

Our work is guided by the detailed DRAD Operational Plan, a practical blueprint that turns the high-level strategy into daily action. This plan ensures our activities directly contribute to the University’s research goals through key initiatives, including:

  • Promoting an Active Research Culture: We facilitate the appointment of Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Associates, coordinate grant applications, and run targeted programmes to support emerging female researchers.
  • Strengthening Postgraduate Support: Through the PG Hub, we offer a comprehensive suite of methodology workshops (from quantitative analysis with SPSS to qualitative methods with NVIVO), writing retreats, and research induction programmes to ensure our students succeed.
  • Enhancing Research Integrity: We are committed to fostering ethical research standards through robust ethics training for students and supervisors, and by aligning our processes with national guidelines.
  • Streamlining Research Systems: We are digitising our ethics submission processes and leveraging data analytics on publications and supervision to enable informed decision-making across the university.
  • Investing in Our People: Programmes like the Staff Doctoral Study Project are designed to build institutional capacity and develop the next generation of UL research leaders.
Looking Forward: Achieving Goal 5 of the UL 2030 Strategic Plan

Our operational plan is the essential first step in a longer journey. We are already looking ahead to achieve the ambitious targets set out in Goal 5 of the University of Limpopo’s Draft Strategic Plan 2030, which aims to significantly improve the University’s research standing and status.

Aligned with the Annual Performance Plan for 2026, our department is committed to delivering on the following key performance indicators:

Building Institutional Research Capacity:

Increasing the number of rated researchers from 53 to 75 by December 2026, with a focus on developing a programme to support researchers in achieving prestigious B-ratings.

Growing the number of post-doctoral fellows to 40 and increasing research chairs to 08 by 2026.

Achieving a 10% year-on-year increase in research income.

Growing Research Output and Impact:

Increasing postgraduate enrolments, with a target of 7% for Master’s and 1.8% for Doctoral students by 2026.

Supporting the University’s publication output targets through our editor-led workshops and writing retreats.

Enhancing Postgraduate Success:

Contributing to the reduction of the average time to completion for Master’s degrees to 2.8 years through improved supervision support and dedicated candidate development programmes.

Our Programmes and Commitment

To support these strategic goals, we offer a range of flagship programmes, including the Doctoral Study Programme and the Research Development and Support, Incentives and Awards Programme.

Ultimately, our work ensures that research at the University of Limpopo is not only of the highest quality but also aligns with national and continental priorities, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063. By doing so, we firmly embody our University’s motto of “Finding Solutions for Africa,” driving progress and contributing meaningfully to the development of our nation and continent.
