University of Limpopo Returns to South Africa’s Biggest University Football Stage!
The countdown is on! The University of Limpopo is ready to take on the nation’s finest as both the men’s and women’s football teams compete in the 2026 Varsity Football tournament, South Africa’s premier university football competition. Bringing together the country’s top eight universities. Varsity Football is where talent, passion and university pride collide on one national stage.
This year’s campaign is a historic milestone for the University of Limpopo. After earning qualification at the 2025 University Sport South Africa (USSA) National Championships, University of Limpopo is one of only five universities in South Africa to have both its men’s and women’s teams competing in the 2026 Varsity Football season. This remarkable achievement reflects the University’s continued investment in sporting excellence and its growing reputation as one of the country’s leading football institutions.
The University of Limpopo men’s team makes a highly anticipated return to Varsity Football for the first time since 2018, marking their third appearance in the competition after qualifying in 2014, 2018 and now 2026. Their return is a testament to years of determination, development and outstanding performances on the national stage.
Meanwhile, the University of Limpopo women’s team continues to cement its place among South Africa’s football elite as they make their fourth Varsity Football appearance, having previously qualified in 2013, 2021 and 2022. Their consistent success highlights the strength and resilience of women’s football at the University of Limpopo.
The 2026 Varsity Football Women’s season kicks off from 1–22 August 2026, while the Men’s competition runs from 7 August–2 October 2026. Every match promises thrilling football, unforgettable moments and the opportunity for the University of Limpopo community to rally behind its teams as they chase national honours.
