Following months of refurbishment, the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Hon Thembi Siweya, has officially launched Radio Turf’s modern high-tech on-air and production studios with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, courtesy of an R1.7 million funding from the Media Diversity Development Agency (MDDA).
Radio Turf broadcasts on 103.8 FM situated at the student centre, University of Limpopo. According to Siweya, the MDDA excels in providing political oversight in the transformation of the community media sector.
“These are the things that we as a government need to communicate to show the community that their government is doing the right things,” she said.
She added that the aim was to reach all community radio stations so that they could continue to send informative messages to the communities they serve.
“The station should continue to transform skills to carry out its mission and vision.”
The station moved from analogue to digital high-tech on-air and production studios, which will enhance the apprentices’ experiences in honing production skills.
Mawethu Mapulane, Chairperson of Radio Turf’s Board, stated that the station broadcasts 24 hours a day to Greater Mankweng, Boyne, Mamabolo, Dikgale, and other tribal communities, as well as Polokwane and some parts of Seshego.
Cllr Mamedupi Teffo, Executive Mayor of Capricorn District Municipality, added that not many campus-based community radio stations have such a large footprint and listenership outside of campus as Radio Turf do.
“We communicate development aimed at bettering the lives of our people through community radio stations like Radio Turf,” she said.
MEC for Department of Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism (LEDET), Hon. Thabo Mokone, who was also in attendance, said that since the station reaches some parts of Polokwane, the improved equipment will enhance the station’s competitiveness.
“It will be very important to talk about and affirm some of the languages that populate Limpopo Province because the station serves as a melting pot for people who come from outside the Sepedi-speaking communities,” said Hlengani Mathebula, Chairperson of the MDDA Board and alumnus of UL.
Prof Kwena Masha, University Registrar, stated that Polokwane East is the fastest growing community, and its expansion is dependent on the knowledge economy.
“With knowledge and entertainment, the station plays a critical role in assisting and sustaining the community,” he said.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for LED in the Capricorn District Municipality, Cllr Caroline Mamabolo also attended the launch.
