Understanding the demands on staff members, who often struggle to find time for physical activities or routine health check-ups, the University of Limpopo (UL) organised the ‘Employees Sport and Wellness Day’ for its staff
This initiative aimed to provide easy access to essential health services and wellness activities, promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Hosted by the Human Resources Department and the University Staff Sport Association (ULSSA), the event sought to create a healthy work environment by offering a wide range of free health and wellness services. These services included various physical activities such as aerobics, soccer, netball, and volleyball, as well as essential health screenings like blood pressure checks, glucose tests, BMI assessments, and cholesterol checks. Additional offerings included physiotherapy, dental care, and podiatry services, allowing staff to address their well-being comprehensively without leaving campus.
Asser Bopape from Tsheko Wellness Centre, stressed the importance of regular health check-ups, especially in preventing potential health issues before they escalate. “Health check-ups should not be limited to Sports and Wellness Day; they should become a regular habit. Employees should continue looking after themselves because it’s crucial to know what’s happening with their health,” he said.
Victor Makgobela, Chairperson of ULSSA, further highlighted the significance of the event, noting that a healthy body fosters a healthy mind, ultimately benefiting the University. “We organised this event to check on employees’ well-being, encourage participation in sports activities, and ensure they are physically fit to perform their duties effectively.”
Marata Mokhiti, from the University Wellness Office and one of the event organisers, stressed the emphasis on holistic well-being. “We are encouraging our employees to maintain their physical, mental, and social well-being.”
The event served not only as a platform for health awareness but also provided an opportunity for staff to take a break from their usual work routine and engage with colleagues in a more relaxed, social setting. Many employees took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities and connect with others beyond the confines of office spaces.

Dr. Tukiso Segwapa, from the Department of Research Administration and Development, shared her experience as an employee: “I loved the idea of taking some time away from the office and being outdoors, doing sports, and meeting other employees. It was a beautiful day. Aerobics were my favourite part of the event because anyone can participate, and I appreciated the health screenings, which gave me an overview of my health, including glucose levels.”
