HR’s staff wellness day touted to boost productivity and healthy living

With the aim of   promoting healthy living, well-being, and nutrition amongst staff members, while recognising the positive impact on productivity and overall wellness, the University of Limpopo (UL) Human Resources (HR) Department hosted Wellness Day event

Held at the University’s Oscar Mpetha Stadium, the event offered a spectrum of services including massages, healthy eating, screening, health risk assessments and aerobics sessions, providing attendees with opportunities to prioritise their physical and mental well-being.

Kerrylee Naidoo from UL HR Department highlighted the significance of this holistic approach to wellness, indicating the importance of preventative healthcare through early detection and risk identification. Naidoo emphasised the role of such events in empowering individuals to proactively manage their health.

“Thanks to our stakeholders such as Alexander Forbes, BestMed, Bonitas and Sizwe Hosmed, who aimed to attract the staff members to participate more actively in their medical aid benefits. I believe that from this event, staff members will be better informed and empowered to lead a healthier life,” added Naidoo.

The event also provided a platform for external service providers to showcase and offer their services to staff members. Among them was Tshoseletso Spa, renowned for its expertise in massages.  Recognising the benefits of relaxation and improved blood circulation, Conny Manku, the Spa Manager, emphasised the importance of massages for both recovery and relaxation.  “Massage plays a pivotal role in blood circulation, whether aiding in exercise recovery or providing pure relaxation can benefit individuals of all ages,” exclaimed Manku.

Another exhibitor, Makgabo Sekobane of Grablife advocated for healthy eating habits, offering practical and affordable food tips aligned with diverse lifestyles.

“As Grablife, we offer tailored eating plans to promote healthy living through practical and affordable food tips aligned with individual lifestyles. We encourage avoiding overprocessed food to prevent chronic diseases. Remember, ‘Green is health!” exclaimed Sekobane.

Attendees like Tebogo Mashale, from UL’s Department of Marketing and Communication, praised the initiative, particularly enjoying the aerobics sessions which provided a welcome break from office routines. “I hope for more frequent initiatives like this, given our office-based routines. They are incredibly beneficial for our health, allowing us to get away from the chairs to stretch our muscles,” she appealed.

Another staff member Job Matlebjane, from UL Safety and Security, appreciated the comprehensive services offered during the event.

“I appreciated being able to undergo all necessary tests right at my workspace. This initiative was eye-opening, and I believe holding it at least twice a year would greatly increase awareness about people’s health and proper nutrition, helping individuals understand their health status and how to improve it efficiently,” said Matlebjane.
