The School of Accountancy, in collaboration with the School of Law within the Faculty of Management and Law at the University of Limpopo, is excited to announce the official launch of its Tax Clinic. This initiative is designed to unite unrepresented taxpayers with tax experts and clinic specialists, facilitating the exchange of essential information and resources.
The launch event is themed “Tax Clinics as Catalysts of Access to Taxpayer Rights, Social Justice, and Compliance.” It aims to create a networking environment where unrepresented taxpayers can connect with tax professionals, fostering ongoing relationships that enhance the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
The primary goal is to introduce unrepresented taxpayers to the comprehensive services offered by the University of Limpopo Tax Clinic, which is committed to bridging gaps in tax knowledge and accessibility.
Additionally, the launch seeks to strengthen relationships between unrepresented taxpayers and seasoned tax practitioners, facilitating a platform for knowledge exchange and ongoing support. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in expert discussions featuring a panel of esteemed tax practitioners, government officials, renowned academics, and international guest speakers who are leaders in the field.
Notably, the University of Limpopo’s Tax Clinic is pioneering a unique community engagement project that specifically addresses the needs of rural communities. Recognising that many unrepresented taxpayers face significant barriers due to limited tax knowledge or financial constraints that prevent them from accessing paid tax advisory services, this clinic will provide free assistance to help empower these individuals.
The launch is open to a broad audience, encouraging participation from unrepresented taxpayers, students, and professionals in the field, including representatives from the South African Revenue Service (SARS), the Office of the Tax Ombud, accredited tax practitioners, and members of tax clinic networks.
Participants can look forward to substantial networking opportunities, along with invaluable knowledge and expertise that will benefit both taxpayers and tax professionals alike.
Featuring prominent international guest speakers, the event will include:
- Donovan Castelyn, International Taxpayer Rights Advocate from Australia, who will share insights into global best practices in taxpayer rights advocacy.
- Annette Morgan, Director of the Curtin Tax Clinic in Australia, who will discuss innovative approaches to tax clinic operations and community engagement strategies.
In addition, distinguished stakeholders representing organisations such as SARS, the Office of the Tax Ombud, various professional bodies within tax and accounting, members of the South African Tax Clinics, and a diverse array of tax practitioners will be present, further enriching the conversation and networking possibilities.
This launch promises to be a significant milestone in enhancing taxpayer awareness and rights, and we invite all interested parties to join us for this impactful event.
