DIMAMO Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) Platform

PI: Dr Joseph Tlouyamma

Background

The DIMAMO Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) platform is a population-based research platform located in Limpopo, South Africa, and forms part of the national SAPRIN network. It continuously monitors a defined population of over 100,000 individuals through longitudinal household visits. The system collects data on births, deaths, migration, socio-economic conditions, and health outcomes, providing a comprehensive understanding of population health and its determinants in rural communities. DIMAMO plays a critical role in generating high-quality, longitudinal data that complement routine health information systems, particularly in settings where administrative data may be incomplete. It supports research, policy development, and evaluation of public health interventions.

Aim

To generate continuous, high-quality longitudinal data on population health, demographic dynamics, and socio-economic conditions to support evidence-based decision-making and health system strengthening.

Objectives

  • To monitor demographic events such as births, deaths, and migration over time
  • To track population health trends and disease patterns
  • To assess socio-economic conditions and their impact on health
  • To evaluate access to and utilisation of health and social services

To provide a platform for epidemiological research and public health interventions
