PI: Prof E Maimela & Mr KP Seakamela

Background and rationale

Smoking is a public health issue. Hubbly bubbly smoking amongst youths has increased in prevalence over the years. There’s misinformation regarding the smoking of hubbly bubbly/water-pipe across cultures and races. This narrative of hubbly bubbly smoking being less harmful compared to cigarette smoking has been pushed by social media. Literature regarding the comparison between cigarettes and hubbly bubbly smoking has been published. The results are showing that hubbly bubbly smokers are more at risk of smoking-related complications compared to cigarette smokers. There are no regulations on Vape, hubbly bubbly smoking, and sales. There’s not enough literature regarding the effect of hubbly bubbly smoking amongst university students, and most did not investigate the lung function of the youths who are current hubbly bubbly smokers.  Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the association between hubbly bubbly smoking and lung function among students at the University of Limpopo.
