The President of the University of Limpopo Alumni and Convocation, Mr Donald Selamolela, met with the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Jeffrey Mabelebele, on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, to personally convey the full support of Convocation and Alumni for his leadership and that of his management team.
During this engagement, the President pledged the commitment of Alumni and Convocation to support the Vice-Chancellor’s vision, priorities, and goals for the University throughout his tenure, recognising the importance of stable, principled, and collaborative leadership at this critical moment in the institution’s history.
In the same spirit of support and unity, the President also met separately with the Executive Committees of the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the UL Postgraduate Students Association. These engagements were aimed at encouraging constructive dialogue, mutual understanding, and collective responsibility in advancing the best interests of the University community.
Convocation acknowledges that student leaders occupy a dual and important role: as spokespersons for the student body and as statutory members of the University Council, with shared responsibility for institutional governance, sustainability, and long-term stability. We therefore encourage student leadership to continue striking a principled balance between advocacy and governance, always guided by the broader interests of the University.
Convocation further recognises the financial challenges facing the higher education sector, including the impact of declining government funding, which are well understood by the University community. In this context, we welcome the Vice- Chancellor’s assurance that no student will be left unregistered in the current academic year and his commitment to exploring all possible avenues to support students who are genuinely needy and require assistance.
At the same time, Convocation calls on students who are able to do so to act responsibly and honour their obligations to the University, in a spirit of shared accountability and partnership.
The Alumni and Convocation Association therefore urges all students to support the vision and leadership of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, to engage constructively through established institutional processes, and to work together in safeguarding the stability, reputation, and future of the University of Limpopo.
