Theme: Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Advancing the Circular Economy Through Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Research, and Collaboration
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) is scheduled to a comprehensive three-day Circular Economy Summit in 2026 at the University of Limpopo. This summit serves as an important platform specifically designed for students from the University of Limpopo to engage, interact, and share best practices and valuable experiences with a diverse array of stakeholders. These stakeholders include regulators, industry leaders, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), State-Owned Entities, Municipalities, academic institutions, and various government departments.
The main purpose of the summit is to discuss and explore collaborative efforts in key areas such as research, innovative technologies, product and process design, public participation models, and public-private partnerships. Furthermore, the summit aims to address funding models, service delivery strategies, business models, and frameworks for active citizenry and cooperative engagement. A central focus will be placed on fostering a supportive policy and regulatory environment that empowers students and emerging entrepreneurs to leverage the opportunities presented by the circular economy, particularly in the waste sector. This engagement is crucial for making strides in tackling pervasive issues like poverty, inequality, unemployment, climate change, and the challenges related to waste service delivery, all while ensuring that our environment is safeguarded for the benefit of present and future generations.
The summit will encompass four specialised commissions, which will serve as breakaway sessions led by experienced facilitators. Each commission may also include panel discussions to enrich the dialogue. The facilitators will represent a wide spectrum of expertise from industries, academic circles, government bodies, and NGOs, ensuring diverse perspectives are included.
- Commission 1 will delve into Government Policies and Projects, examining existing frameworks and initiatives that impact the circular economy.
- Commission 2 will focus on Funding, exploring innovative financing mechanisms and investment opportunities for circular economy initiatives.
- Commission 3 will center around Research and Innovation, highlighting cutting-edge research and technological advancements that can propel the circular economy forward.
- Commission 4 will concentrate on Projects, where participants will discuss practical applications and case studies that demonstrate the effectiveness of circular economy principles in real-world scenarios.
Expected Outcomes of the Summit:
The summit aims to achieve several critical outcomes that will not only benefit students but also the surrounding communities:
- Opportunities for Entrepreneurship: The summit will create pathways for students and local communities to explore entrepreneurial ventures within the circular economy, particularly in waste management and related sectors.
- Skill Development Initiatives: There will be a concerted effort to establish skill development programmes focused on the waste sector, chemicals, and environmental stewardship, equipping students with the necessary tools and knowledge.
