The recent top-eight soccer tournament at the University of Limpopo (UL), sponsored by MMR Sports, was more than just a game —it was a game-changer for many students
This first-ever tournament gave players a great chance to be noticed by scouts from the country’s top-flight leagues, possibly kickstarting their professional careers.
This electrifying tournament brought together the best eight teams from the Turfloop Soccer League (TSL), all under the expert guidance of the UL Department of Sports Administration and Recreation.
Kakiso Komote, Chairman of MMR Sports, shared his motivation behind sponsoring the tournament. “What inspired me to sponsor this tournament was the opportunity to grow my brand through collaboration with the University of Limpopo. I am already looking forward to next year’s tournament, as this will be a continuous initiative within the TSL,” he shared with pride.
From the very start, the competition was fierce. The quarterfinals set the stage, with Rangers edging out Mochachos 1-0, Links defeating Juventus 2-0, UL Development securing a narrow 1-0 win over Madrid, and Sundowns delivering a heart-pounding 3-2 victory against Barcelona. The intensity continued to grow at an exponential rate in the semifinals, where Rangers powered through with a 2-0 win over Links, and Sundowns advanced to the final by overcoming UL Development 3-2 in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout after a goalless draw. The final match was a clash of titans, but Sundowns rose to the occasion, claiming the championship with a decisive 2-0 victory over Rangers.
The tournament also bolstered by sponsorship from Sunbake, Maboke Matlala Foundation, SuperSport, Polokwane Adventures, and Limpopo MedCentre, was not just about winning—it was about creating opportunities.
Bethwell Makukuli, Football Manager at UL, emphasised the significance of the event as a platform for student-athletes to shine. “The curtain-raiser between ULSSA and Galacticos FC, a team of former professional football players, gave our players a unique chance to showcase their talents. I expect these teams to not only demonstrate their skills but also contribute to finding solutions for Africa through university sports.”
The atmosphere throughout the day was nothing short of electric. Fans from all walks of life filled the stands, united by their love for the game. The sense of community was overwhelming, with new friendships forged and old rivalries reignited.
Nathaniel Phalane, the standout player of the final, who plays for Sundowns, was especially grateful for the opportunity. Though not a UL student, his time training with the University squad has boosted his confidence. “I am grateful to God for this opportunity,” Phalane said engulfed with emotions of gratitude.
The UL’s soccer talent is increasingly being recognised. Recently, four players from the UL Senior team and the TSL were signed by Kaizer Chiefs Development and Magesi FC, both of which are professional teams. This recognition underscores the growing reputation of UL as a breeding ground for top-tier football talent.
The MMR Super 8 Tournament was recorded for Supersport Kasi Soccer Show, set to soon be broadcast on DStv Channel 209, giving the young players a chance to gain recognition and support from football fans across Africa.
