The University of Limpopo (UL) joins the nation in mourning the passing of Tito Titus Mboweni, a distinguished alumnus and an iconic figure in South Africa’s political and economic landscape.
Many admired Mboweni for his vibrant personality and sharp intellect. Mboweni’s exemplary career as a South African statesman and economist left an indelible mark on both the political and financial sectors of our country. As the first Black South African to serve as Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, and later as the Minister of Finance, among other roles, including the labour ministry, he helped guide the nation’s economic policy during critical times.
Significantly, Mboweni was born in 1959, the very year that the University of the North, now the University of Limpopo, was founded. This unique alignment of his birth with the establishment of our institution marks him as one of the torchbearers of progress and transformation in the region and beyond.
Mboweni’s ties to the University began in 1979 when he enrolled for Bachelor of Commerce – and it marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to public service and economic development. Though his studies were interrupted by his forced exile during the struggle against apartheid, his connection to the University remained intact over the years and was recently reignited in September 2024, when he delivered a profound keynote address at UL’s 65th-anniversary celebrations. His insightful reflections on skills development and rural livelihoods showcased his enduring passion for community development and engaged scholarship, embodying the very values our institution stands for.
Known as “Duke” for his charisma and leadership, Mboweni’s legacy extends far beyond his public roles. He was a mentor, a nation-builder, and a symbol of resilience. His journey from student activist to national leader is a source of inspiration for future generations at the University of Limpopo and across the country. His return to our institution to engage with students and academics was a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between the University and the leaders it has helped to shape.
As we reflect on his life and accomplishments, the University extends its deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Mboweni’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. His memory will live on, inspiring countless others to pursue excellence and to serve with integrity.
