Sport is essential in keeping students fit and focused, and over the weekend of 12 and 13 October 2024, the University of Limpopo (UL) Football Club made another stride towards glory, securing a gritty 2-1 win over Moria Sweepers in the Hollywood Regional League Nedbank Preliminaries

This victory at the iconic Oscar Mpetha Stadium propels UL to the next stage, with dreams of facing South Africa’s football giants like Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns becoming a reality if they reach the last 32.

The match drew a vibrant crowd, with Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members rallying behind Moria Sweepers and UL students passionately supporting their side. Having dominated earlier preliminaries with a 4-1 win over Boyne Tigers and a 2-0 triumph against Rangata FC, UL faced a tougher battle this time, securing the 2-1 win late in the game.

Head Coach Laka “Coach Duke” Lesetja praised the team’s grit and determination, saying, “We’ve worked tirelessly over the past 10 weeks for this season. With the Nedbank Cup, League, and USSAs ahead, this group of talented, hungry young men is ready. It’s going to be tough for opponents, especially at home.”

The Acting Director of Sport and Recreation at UL , Sonica Fitz, echoed similar sentiments, commending the leadership of ‘Coach Duke’ and the team’s impressive improvement: “Coach ‘Duke’ has been with the boys for 10 months, and their growth is clear. I’m incredibly proud of their progress.”

One of the previous matches, UL can be seen putting on a fierce competition against Rangata FC, thereby securing a convincing 2-0 victory to set up a clash with Moria Sweepers

UL Football Club’s strong campaign through Stream C continues, with the team determined to take on bigger challenges as they advance in the Nedbank Cup. Backed by the University community, the squad is poised for an exciting season ahead, with fans eager to see how far they can go.
