The University of Limpopo invites all students to participate in an engaging Youth Dialogue on Local Governance and the 2026 Local Government Elections. This event aims to create a platform where young people can openly discuss the importance of civic participation, the responsibilities of local government, and the role of youth in shaping a responsive and accountable democratic system. As the country prepares for the 2026 Local Government Elections, it is crucial for students to understand how their voices and votes influence decision-making at the community level.
The dialogue will take place on Thursday, 14 May 2026 at 14:00 in the R40 Conference Hall. The theme for this year’s session, “From Campus to Community: Why the Youth Vote Matters in Local Government,” highlights the urgent need for young people to transition from being passive observers to active participants in democratic processes. The discussion will explore how youth engagement can strengthen service delivery, improve governance, and contribute to sustainable local development.
Students will also benefit from insights shared by partners such as the Solly Foundation, SALGA, and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). The dialogue offers an opportunity not only to learn about the electoral process but also to reflect on the power of youth influence in shaping the future of municipalities across the country. Participants will be encouraged to register to vote and take part in ensuring accountable leadership within their communities.
