Women in Science Seminar

 

The Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of Limpopo takes pleasure in announcing the hosting of the 3rd Women in Science Seminar. Renowned Professor Mapitsi S. Thantsha will deliver a presentation on “Augmenting the efficiency of probiotics for food and feed applications: The journey behind and the road ahead” during this seminar.

About the Speaker

Professor Mapitsi S. Thantsha is currently an Associate Professor of Microbiology in the Department of Biochemistry, Genetics, and Microbiology (BGM) at the University of Pretoria. She began as a Junior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology and worked her way up through the ranks to her current position. Additionally, Professor Thantsha serves as the Chair of Division for the Microbiology Division in the BGM Department.

She earned her BSc in Microbiology and Biochemistry as well as her BSc Hons in Microbiology from the University of Limpopo (formerly known as the University of the North, Turfloop). Furthermore, she obtained her MSc in Microbiology (with honors), a PhD in Microbiology, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Pretoria.

Her research focuses on the beneficial members of the gastrointestinal microflora, known as probiotics. She is particularly interested in strategies to improve their survival in the gastrointestinal tract and during product storage and their use in controlling foodborne pathogens. Professor Thantsha is a C2 NRF-rated researcher and a Fulbright alumna. She has supervised numerous postgraduate students, published papers in reputable scientific journals, and presented at national and international conferences.
