About the Department
Welcome to the Department of Social Work. This department is attached to the School of Social Sciences within the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo. Rooted in reflection, the Department of Social Work identified a focus area where it can contribute solutions and enhance the lives of people in the local communities.
The department identified that their physical setting, “poor and underdeveloped rural communities,” plays an important role in differentiating the social work education at the University of Limpopo from other institutions. More importantly, the greater responsibility of the department begins with providing the disadvantaged students with a transformative quality education. The department therefore decided to create a unique identity and strategically focus the educational resources to face the main challenge facing Limpopo province, which is poverty.
The department is more focused on expressing a shared vision, mission, and values – that are aspirational and future focused and in alignment with the University’s vision to be a leading African university, focused on the developmental needs of its communities and epitomising academic excellence and innovativeness.”

About the Social Work Programme
The Department of Social Work at the University of Limpopo provides a social work education that is academically challenging and vocationally relevant to the South African context. The purpose of the programme is to develop dynamic and competent Social Workers that has exceptional professional knowledge and skills to lead and advance social work in Africa and globally. This will be evident by the graduates’:

Teaching and Learning Pedagogy
The BSW programme at the University of Limpopo is offered on a contact basis wherein the department uses learner-centered approaches rooted in the constructivist framework of learning theory, which encourages students to deeply engage with the learning material, develop a dialogue, and reflect on their progress.
Master of Social Work Programme
The programme is a Master of Social Work by Full Research which is offered as Full Time Contact and pitched at NQF level 9. To be admitted in this programme, the prospective students should meet the following requirements:
- Should have completed a BSW programme or equivalent four years degree in Social Work.
- Should be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Worker.
- Should be fit and proper person to practice Social Work as prescribed by SACSSP, and
- Should be able to come up with a researchable topic within the field of Social Work.
Doctor of Philosophy
The programme is offered as Full Time Contact and pitched at NQF level 10. To be admitted in this programme, the prospective students should meet the following requirements:
- Should have completed a BSW programme or equivalent four years degree in Social Work.
- Should have completed a MSW programme or equivalent masters degree in Social Work.
- Should be registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Worker.
- Should be fit and proper person to practice Social Work as prescribed by SACSSP, and
- Should be able to come up with a researchable topic within the field of Social Work.
Prof Selelo Frank Rapholo

Academic Background and Qualifications.
Prof SF Rapholo obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Social Work qualification from the University of Limpopo in 2009, where his academic career began. Prof Rapholo, a Y2 NRF Rated Professor and current Head of the Department of Social Work at the University of Limpopo, holds a Master of Social Work: Forensic Practice with the North West University and a PhD in Social Work obtained from the University of Limpopo. His postgraduate studies rigorously explored the disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA) with a specific focus on forensic investigation in CSA allegations. Prof Rapholo’s career as a registered Social Worker with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) began in 2009 with the Limpopo Provincial Department of Social Development (DSD) wherein he practiced generic social work. It was during his practice as a social worker at DSD that he developed a premonition to scientifically explore the area of CSA, and he has become an expert in the field.
Research and Teaching Interests
Prof Rapholo’s niche area in research lies primarily in the disclosure of CSA. He contributed several articles and book chapters in this field in the DHET-accredited and high-impact journals and books. Prof Rapholo also successfully supervised master’s and doctoral studies within the field of CSA. Subsequently, Prof Rapholo presented a number of papers within this field both at the national and international conferences. His research contributes to the growing body of knowledge in the evidence-based intervention programmes and policies in mitigating CSA worldwide. In addition, Prof Rapholo also contributed his research in Migration Studies, Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), Religion and Spirituality, and Substance Abuse, which are also making strides in the scientific body of knowledge.
Prof Rapholo’s teaching journey started as a lecturer at the University of Limpopo in 2015 in the Department of Social Work. He successfully contributed in graduating a number of cohorts of social work graduates and postgraduate students. In his teaching, Prof Rapholo’s teaching pedagogy is grounded in the teacher-learner-centered, developmental, empowerment, and constructivist approaches, with the intention to prepare independent, constructive, and innovative social work practitioners who would be able to deal with complex problems affecting society. He applies a series of interactive teaching methods such as role plays, oral presentations, case studies and simulations, agency observations, and guest lectures to expose students to the real world. Prof Rapholo’s teaching pedagogy is not only centered on module content but also on instilling reflective and critical thinking amongst students who would be able to efficiently deal with multifaceted global problems.
Professional Experience.
Prof Rapholo is both an academic and an experienced social worker. He practiced as a social worker at the Limpopo Provincial Department of Social Development, where he gained a lot of practical experience, which he applies in his classroom teaching and learning. He also served in managerial positions wherein he acted as a social work supervisor and NPO coordinator at DSD. This predominantly assisted him with leadership skills and qualities that also enable him to execute his role and responsibilities as the current Head of Department of Social Work at the University of Limpopo.
Contributions and Achievements.
Prof Rapholo published over 36 articles and 5 book chapters in the DHET-accredited and high-impact peer-reviewed journals. He successfully supervised 7 master’s students and 3 doctoral students. He is currently actively involved in the supervision of postgraduate students. Prof Rapholo is a member of the Substance Abuse Forum by the Limpopo Provincial Department of Social Development. He is also the editorial board member for the Maatskaplikwerk Journal of Social Work. As a result of his hard work, commitment, and diligence in the work he does, Prof Rapholo has been recognized internally and externally through the following awards:
- NRF-FRF-Black Academics Advancement Programme Scholarship in 2019 and 2020.
- Best Upcoming Researcher in the University during the Vice Chancellor and Principal excellence awards in December 2020.
- Best Social Work Researcher during the ASASWEI conference held at the University of Zululand at Richards Bay, University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2021.
- Most Emerging Researchers in the Faculty of Humanities during the Faculty Spring Lecturers in September 2024.
- Best Researcher in the School during the Vice Chancellor and Principal excellence awards in October 2024.
Impact and Engagement.
Prof Rapholo strongly believes in teamwork, and he applies this approach even in his postgraduate supervision to foster inter-learning amongst students. This approach plays a significant role in the development and mentorship of students. Prof Rapholo developed a strong relationship with organisations outside the university space, which plays a significant role in the placement of students for experiential learning and professional networking, and partnership.

- Academic Background and Qualifications:
Dr. PM Dimo is a qualified social worker who is registered with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP), demonstrating his commitment to ethical standards and professional excellence in the field. With sixteen years of experience in academia and six years dedicated as a social worker, he has a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals and communities. His commitment to making a positive impact is truly commendable. His academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work, which he obtained from North-West University in 2002. He earned his Master of Social Work degree from the University of Limpopo in 2013 and obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Social Work at North-West University in 2017
- Research and Teaching Interests:
Dr. PM Dimo is a public health expert, and he has an interest in Gender-Based Violence, Substance abuse, social policy, and community development. He has published several papers on organ donation and teenage pregnancy.
- Professional Experience:
DR Dimo’s professional journey commenced in 2003 when he joined the Department of Social Development as a dedicated social worker in the Johannesburg Metro Region. His exemplary performance and leadership skills earned him a promotion to a senior social work position. In this role, he was entrusted with the responsibility of mentoring junior staff members, auxiliary social workers, and student social workers from various esteemed institutions of higher learning across South Africa. This involved not only guiding them through the complexities of social work but also fostering their professional growth and ensuring high standards of practice. In 2009, he joined the University of Limpopo as a fieldwork coordinator, where he played a pivotal role in overseeing the fieldwork practice component of the social work program. Dr. PM Dimo joined North-West University in 2014 as a lecturer. His expertise in social policy and various specialized areas within social work allowed him to impart crucial knowledge to his students. He did not only teach essential modules but also supervised extensive research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, guiding students in their academic pursuits and helping them develop their research skills. Moreover, he acted as the Head of Department at the University of Zululand, where he demonstrated strong leadership and vision. In this capacity, he played an instrumental role in the development of the Bachelor of Social Work Programme, worked diligently on the review of the Master of Arts in Community Work, and the postgraduate diploma in Community Work. He was also responsible for teaching research methodology, which provided his students with critical analytical skills, as well as an introductory course in social work that laid the foundation for their future studies. In addition to his academic contributions, he initiated a community engagement project aimed specifically at alleviating teenage pregnancy in the KwaZulu-Natal Province. In 2022, he joined the University of Johannesburg as a lecturer and thereafter joined the University of Limpopo as a field coordinator. He is currently a senior lecturer and a fieldwork coordinator at the University of Limpopo. Dr PM Dimo is a member of Departmental Research Ethics Committee (DREC) and School Research Ethics Committee (SREC) committees.

Mr Thembinkosi Peter Singwane
Academic Background and Qualifications.
Mr Singwane holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of the Witwatersrand. His academic focus has consistently been in the field of substance use disorders and Harm Reduction.
He holds certifications as a registered Assessor and Moderator (HWSETA) and is a member of the International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP). Mr Singwane serves on the board of the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA).
His academic achievements include awards at the undergraduate level, a Wits Language School award for academic writing, and the Most Resourceful Employee award from the University of Limpopo’s Faculty of Humanities in 2023.
Research and Teaching Interests
Mr Singwane’s research interests lie primarily in the field of substance use disorders, with a focus on harm reduction approaches, addiction management, mental health, and unemployment. His work contributes to the growing body of knowledge around evidence-based interventions in drug demand reduction and the social determinants of addiction and recovery.
In terms of teaching, Mr Singwane facilitated senior-level modules such as Social Work within the Criminal Justice System, Community Work, Vulnerability, and Social Action. His teaching philosophy is grounded in learner-centered, constructivist, and transformative approaches, aimed at preparing students for complex, real-world social work practice.
He employs a range of interactive and innovative teaching strategies such as case study analysis, role plays, advocacy simulations, guest lectures, and the use of digital tools like Blacbard, Padlet and Mentimeter to enhance student engagement. His focus is not only on content delivery but also on cultivating critical thinking, reflective practice, ethical reasoning, and applied knowledge. Mr Singwane is particularly committed to aligning his teaching with current social realities and professional standards, thereby equipping students to respond effectively to the multifaceted challenges of social work in South Africa.

Mr Singwane has over 10 years of professional experience across the public, NGO, Higher education and corporate sectors, having worked with SANCA, the Department of Social Development, and AB InBev Corporate Affairs. He brings this multidisciplinary background into his academic practice, enhancing the relevance and application of classroom learning.

Academic Background and Qualifications:
Dr Prudence Mafa holds a Doctoral degree in Social Work from the University of Limpopo. She is currently a senior lecturer in the Department of Social Work. Her Prior roles include serving as a social worker/therapist in the substance abuse field.
Research and Teaching Interests:
Dr Mafa is a researcher and academic whose work focuses on substance abuse, family social work, and migration. Her research explores the socio-cultural factors influencing substance use disorders, treatment challenges, migration issues in the SADC region, and issues of concern to Black families in contemporary society.
Some key research contributions:
Substance Abuse and Family Systems: Dr Mafa has investigated the impact of teenage substance abuse on family dynamics, highlighting parents’ coping mechanisms and structural barriers to treatment in rural South African communities. Her work emphasizes the role of cultural beliefs, including spiritual attributions to addiction and recovery.
Migration: Contributed to studies on African migrant labour challenges in South Africa, linking socio-economic factors to unfair labour practices.
Family Social Work: Explored how issues such as substance abuse, intimate partner violence, poverty, unresponsive labour market, complex extended family dynamics affect the functioning of families.
Teaching and supervision
Dr Mafa teaches undergraduate social work students, with an emphasis on community engagement and fieldwork alignment. Furthermore, she supervises postgraduate students.
Contributions and Achievements:
Dr Mafa collaborates with institutions addressing social work challenges. Notable collaborations include research work with counterparts from the University of Namibia, University of Cape Town, University of Venda, North West University, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Lunds Universitet.
Impact and Engagement:
Dr Mafa serves in research committees at various levels in the University, including the institutional review board, the Turfloop Research Ethics committee (TREC). She also volunteers as a Kindi for Center for Academic Excellence based at the University of Limpopo.
Dr Matshemo J Moganedi

STAFF PROFILE TEMPLATE
Dr MJ Moganedi is a registered social worker who holds a Bachelor of Social work degree from the University of South Africa. Dr Moganedi also holds a master’s degree from the University of South Africa and a Doctoral Degree in Social Work from the University of Limpopo. In addition, Dr Moganedi is registered with South African Counsil for Social Service Professions and HWSETA as an assessor. She is also a member of Association of South African Social Work Education Institutions (ASASWEI).
Research and Teaching Interests
Dr MJ Moganedi has published several research articles in DHET accredited Journals and has also presented in National and international conferences. Her research interests are in Gender-based violence, victim empowerment, skills development, sheltering services, employee wellness, teenage pregnancy and human trafficking.
As per Paulo Freire, Dr Moganedi believes that teaching is both art and science. She uses a combination of different teaching methods including Constructive, Collaborative, Integrative, Reflective, and Inquiry-based. These are all applied in recognition that students are human beings, and they need to be exposed to different learning methods. Her point of departure is that she identifies where the student is and walks the journey with them towards success. One of the means of teaching and learning which Dr Moganedi finds helpful is the application of an open-door policy where students can ask questions, engage in the class but have consultations as per their needs.
Professional Experience
Dr Moganedi worked for various organisations as a professional social worker in Bureau for Student Counselling at the University of Sout Africa, guiding students on how to choose correct courses including degrees. In 2001, she worked for the Abba Adoptions providing counselling to both birth and adoptive parents in preparation for the adoption. At the same time, she also worked for Catholic Women’s League practising generic social work. In 2002, she joined the South African Police Services (SAPS), practising occupational social work. She then proceeded to the National Department of Social Development working in policy development, implementation and review for 14 years. She participated in the development of human trafficking material during her involvement in the victim empowerment programme, (VEP); providing supervision to social workers at the twenty-four hours gender-based violence command centre (GBVCC) facility. She also led and coordinated 365 programmes of action (POA) calendar days from the national office. She developed different materials for awareness raising in communities such as ‘Men as positive role models, Orange Day Campaign, and Everyday Heroes’. Dr Moganedi also shared her learnt skills and ploughed back to UNISA, department of social work and provided supervision and assessment for the fourth years prior to enrolling for her PhD. She was a committee member for the Library and for the Humanities and Social Sciences International Conference that took place on 10-11 October 2024. She is currently a senior lecturer at the university of Limpopo, and a member of Departmental Research Ethics Committee (DREC).

The conference was at the University of Pretoria, in Gauteng Province, South Africa. She is also reviewing abstracts and manuscripts for various journals.
- She is a reviewer for abstracts and manuscripts for Social Science International Research Conference and Journal of Human Rights and Social Work.
- She also reviewed abstracts for 2025 CRIMSA BIENNIAL Conference to take place on 18 – 22 AUGUST 2025, at Lagoon Beach Hotel & Spa, Cape Town, South Africa. Certificates of appreciation for reviewing abstracts and manuscripts received.

Dr DJ Ramoshaba is a registered Social Worker and Senior lecturer attached to the Department of Social Work at the University of Limpopo. He possesses a doctoral degree in Social Work from the University of Limpopo. Dr Ramoshaba also holds certificates in RPL Practices, Assessment, and Moderation.
Research and Teaching Interests
Dr Ramoshaba’s niche area primarily lies in natural disasters and migration studies, wherein he published several research articles in DHET-accredited journals. Dr Ramoshaba has also published research articles in areas such as Domestic violence and mental health. Dr Ramoshaba has been actively involved in research through research publications, conference presentations and postgraduate supervision.
Dr Ramoshaba’s teaching philosophy is centered around creating a conducive learner-centered environment wherein students are free to participate and gain knowledge. He applies a series of interactive teaching methods such as role plays, oral presentations, case studies and simulations, agency observations and guest lectures to expose students to the real-world situations.

Dr DJ Ramoshaba strongly believes in mentorship, and he applies this approach in the supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate students to equip students with skills for learning and development. Mr. Mathebula earned his foundational professional qualification in social work, obtaining a BSW degree from the University of Limpopo. This program equipped him with core competencies in direct practice, community engagement, ethics, and social justice advocacy. He further advanced his expertise by completing a Master of Social Work degree. Currently, Mr. Mathebula is registered as a PhD candidate at the University of South Africa. His doctoral research continues to explore Gender-based violence, Intimate Partner Violence, and femicide.

Mr. Wiseman Ntlhari Mathebula’s research interests centre around gender-based violence, with a specific focus on intimate partner violence, femicide, and the lived experiences of women in abusive relationships in South Africa, particularly within under-resourced communities. Ms Mamadi holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Limpopo (2021) and is currently a PhD candidate. She is currently a lecturer in the Department of Social Work at the University of Limpopo.
