Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. This is a department that offers modules of Anthropology and Sociology in the Faculty of humanities under the School of Social Sciences. Sociology is the scientific study of society that uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about human social activity. It is a course that will enable you to derive intellectual enjoyment of life through an enriched understanding of the social world in which we live in. In this course, you will learn a new way of analysing the world’s behaviour through sociological methods and techniques, which will enable you to make sense of the rapidly changing world we live in.
The module of Anthropology promotes an understanding of the nature and dynamics of contemporary societies in Africa; the historical development of these societies – starting with the archeological pre – history of Africa as well as the major impact of other cultures and ideologies on African cultures are highlighted. It also promotes an Afrocentric approach of the nature and functions of culture in a multi – cultural context. Ethnographic case studies of social, economic, political and religious institutions in various African cultures acquaint students with every aspect of these cultures.
